Traffic and parking near schools
Parking restrictions are imposed by Council at and near schools to ensure a safer environment for all children and to optimise traffic safety and movement.
No parking zones
No parking zones are usually located in the surrounding streets of most schools.
No parking zones allow for the immediate pick up and drop off of students and other passengers.
The vehicle can only remain in the no parking zone for 2 minutes and the driver must remain within 3 metres of the vehicle.
No stopping zones
No stopping zones are not to be used at any time for stopping, parking, dropping off or picking up students or other passengers.
Continuous yellow line
A continuous yellow line marked on the edge of the road is another indicator advising that the vehicle driver is not allowed at any time to stop, park, drop off or pick up students or other passengers.
Double parking
A driver commits an offence by stopping a vehicle on a road when another vehicle is parked between the driver and the kerb. This includes dropping off or picking up students or other passengers quickly.
School crossings
A driver must not stop on a children's crossing, or on the road within 20 metres before the crossing and 10 metres after the crossing, unless the driver stops to allow a pedestrian to walk across the road. This does not allow you to quickly drop a child off while you stop your vehicle.
Not parallel parked
A driver commits an offence when stopping a vehicle on the road when both passenger side wheels are not as near to the kerb as possible.
Bus zones
Bus zones are for public buses. The driver of a vehicle cannot stop in a bus zone at any time.
Fire hydrants
A driver commits an offence by stopping near a fire hydrant. A driver must not stop within one metre of a fire hydrant, fire hydrant indicator, or fire plug indicator.
Permissive parking signs (timed parking zones)
A driver must not park continuously on a length of road, or in an area, to which a permissive parking sign applies for longer than the period indicated by information on or with the sign.
As an example, if a sign indicates that a driver must not park in the area for longer than 2 hours on Mondays to Fridays between 8.30am and 5pm, and on Saturdays between 8.30am and 12noon, the driver must not park in this signed area for longer or you could face a fine. Outside of these hours and days, the driver can park for longer.
Parking at intersections
It is an offence for a vehicle to park within 20 metres of an intersection with traffic lights and within 10 metres of an intersection without traffic lights.
Bicycle lanes and clearways
Bicycle lanes and clearways are indicated by signs and prohibit vehicles stopping within these zones.
Where times are displayed on the signs, stopping is only permitted before or after the specified period.
Where no times are displayed, stopping or parking is prohibited at all times.
Stopping on any path, dividing strip or nature strip
It is an offence for a vehicle to stop on any path, dividing strip or nature strip adjacent to a length of road in a built-up area.
Solid white line
It is an offence for a vehicle to park within 3 metres of a solid white line. Solid white lines in the centre of the road are designed to maintain safe spacing between vehicles, prevent lane-crossing, and enhance driver safety, particularly near intersections, bends, and other high-risk areas.
