Greyhounds off leash

Council is hosting monthly off-lead events for greyhounds at the West Torrens Dog Park, Moss Avenue, Marleston.

This 12-month program will mean that the North park will be unavailable to all dog owners the last Sunday of the month (excluding December), between 9am and 11am (weather permitting) to allow local owners with registered greyhounds to let their dogs off leash. The South park will remain open for general use for all dogs, and the Central park will be closed during this time for safety reasons.

By law, greyhounds are not allowed to be off leash in public areas. Council has been granted an exemption from the Dog and Cat Management Board for the next 12 months to allow local greyhound owners the opportunity to let their pets off leash in the West Torrens Dog Park.

West Torrens has around 150 registered greyhound owners and, as such, we'll be offering 2, 45-minute sessions at each event. Owners will need to book to be guaranteed a place, with each session catering for a maximum of 15 dogs and their owners. Session one will be from 9.15am - 10am, and session 2 from 10.15am - 11am. 

Owners will be able to book for each session at the beginning of each month in an effort to provide all local greyhound owners the opportunity to take part. All greyhounds must be registered, and proof of registration will be required when completing the online booking. Staff will be on hand at the park to provide assistance and answer any questions.

Non-greyhounds

If you own a dog which is not a greyhound, you will still be able to use the South park of the West Torrens Dog Park during these events. Owners are reminded to keep their dogs on a leash until they are inside the dog park, especially if walking near the North park as greyhounds can become excited at seeing other dog breeds. For this reason, the Central park is remaining closed while the greyhound off-leash events are taking place.
