Streetscape upgrade

Why do we upgrade our streets?

The streets within our city are important for ensuring safe travel for vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians and to help strengthen community connections, accessibility, and amenity to elevate the experience for local residents and visitors.

This includes the safeguard and enhancement of our urban forest and addressing the challenges of urban infill causing increased demand on parking and stormwater drainage systems.

What will works involve?

The upgrade of a streetscape is a multi-stage process and will typically involve the following steps:

1. Reconstruction of kerbing

At this stage we will either undertake maintenance of the existing kerbing to address lifting due to tree roots and water ponding, or we will reconstruct the kerb in full and use the opportunity to standardise the width of the road.

2. Footpath reconstruction

While the kerbing is being reconstructed, the footpath and areas of the verge (nature strip) will be excavated and replaced with either tritone colour pavers or concrete. The verge will be replaced with either loam or rubble, with mulch added to the tree surrounds.

3. Road resurfacing

Following the completion of all other works, the road will be resurfaced with new asphalt to provide a safe, smooth driving and riding surface.

What will be the impact on access to my property?

While we try to minimise the impact to residents, some inconvenience may occur, such as:

  • The road will likely be closed during works.
  • Access to properties will be limited for short periods of time during works hours, however the road will be opened upon the completion of works each night.
  • Generally works are confined between 7am and 6pm Monday to Saturday.
  • Works may involve considerable noise, including horns and reversing beeping to keep workers and the community safe.

When construction works are occurring, your street is a worksite and everyone's safety is important. Take care and listen to construction crews who are approachable and willing to help. Alternatively, call the contact person listed in the letter that is provided to your household.

FAQs

What should I do about bin collection?

Please ensure bins are placed out by 6am as normal on your usual day of collection. Council works with our contractors to coordinate waste collection around construction works, however sometimes bins may be missed. Please leave your bin out and we will endeavour to pick it up the following day. If this doesn’t occur, contact our contractors on 8159 5064or email Solo Resource Recovery Adelaide.ops@solo.com.au.

I would like to widen my driveway or install a new stormwater outlet from my house to the road, how can I do these works at the same time as the construction?

There is an application form for residents to apply to change their driveway or stormwater on Council land. Further information can be found on the Driveways and crossovers page.

I'd like to use the opportunity to green my verge, how can I go about it?

This can be done at the same time as the kerb works. Residents need to complete an application form to apply to plant vegetation on council’s verge. Further information can be found here

I have irrigation in the verge will this be affected by any kerb works?

If you have existing irrigation and sprinklers in the verge, they may need to be removed or adjusted beforehand. While construction crews will try to work around them, we cannot guarantee they will not be damaged. Reinstatement of damaged irrigation pipes or sprinklers will not be covered by council at the completion of the construction work.

Will my artificial turf be replaced after any kerb works are completed?

If you have artificial turf, it will be rolled back to accommodate construction and then replaced 'as is.' If the kerb level and alignment are adjusted, council will not make changes to or replace the artificial lawn.
