Hard waste bookings and waste vouchers

Residents of West Torrens can have up to 2 at call (booked) collections per household per financial year.

This service is for residential households only and not for commercial sites or non-residents of West Torrens.

Bookings must be made in advance and wait times for collections will vary according to the demand and the time of year.

How to book a free collection

Before your collection date, you will receive:

  • confirmation of your collection date (email or letter)

  • household 'Hard Waste Collection' flyer

  • a label to place on your items for collection.

How to cancel a collection

If you no longer require your hard waste collection let us know no later than 48 hours before your collection date.

If we do not receive notice within this time, the booking will count as one collection from your annual allowance.

Home assistance

Assistance is available for people who need help putting hard waste items onto the kerbside outside their house. This service is for those who are frail, live with disability or who live alone and have no one who can assist with moving heavy items.

Council has contracted local not for profit organisation Orana to provide this service. Staff from Orana will visit your house to move hard waste items to the kerbside and will label it with a green sticker which identifies it as a booked collection and not illegally dumped waste. You will need to be home at the time to receive this service and provide your signature once the job is complete.

Contact us on 8416 6333, SMS 0429 502 943, to enquire about the service and if you qualify. If you are eligible, you will be provided with a collection day and Orana staff will visit your house the day before collection to advise on what items can be collected and how much can be put on the kerbside. Council's usual hard waste rules apply on the quantity of waste and the type of items that can be collected. These details can be found below under 'Items that will be collected'.

Collection guidelines

  • A limit of 2 cubic metres of waste (2m x 1m x 1m) per household applies (conditions apply for mattresses).

  • Items must not exceed 2 metres in length.

  • Items must be able to be lifted safely by one person.

  • Items should be placed on the verge no earlier than the night before the collection date. Note: items that are placed on private property will not be collected.

When to put items out for collection

  • Items placed out on the verge early will be considered illegal dumping and may incur an illegal dumping fine.

  • The earlier items are placed out on the verge, the greater the chance that others may add items. This may result in the collection exceeding the permissible volume and some items (whether suitable for collection or not) may not be collected. You will be responsible for disposing of these items.

Label

  • If you have received a hard waste booking label, attach this to an item (preferably not metal) so that it is clearly visible from the road.

  • If you have received an email booking confirmation, please print the label and attach it to an item. 

Maintain safety

It is your responsibility to ensure that the waste is placed and maintained safely until collection, even if it is disturbed by others.

  • Items must be able to be handled safely by two people.

  • Bulky or awkward items (such as wardrobes or sofas) should be placed to one side of the items for collection so they are easy to access.

  • Place your waste clear of the footpath or road, in a safe and secure manner.

  • Don’t stack items too high.

  • Lay tall items down (e.g. bookcases and wardrobes).

  • Tape shut doors on fridges and freezers.

Items that will be collected

  • Bedding.
  • Bicycles and toys.
  • Curtains and blinds - up to 2m lengths rolled and taped.
  • *Electronic Waste - e.g. TVs, computers, vacuum cleaners, kettles, coffee machines.
  • Floor coverings - e.g. carpet, rugs and lino.
  • *Fridges and freezers (tape doors shut).
  • Furniture.
  • *Hot water services and air conditioners (items must be able to be lifted safely).
  • Lawnmowers (empty of oil and petrol).
  • *Mattresses - limit of 2 - see separate information regarding mattresses.
  • *Metal - e.g. sheets of iron and guttering - up to 2m lengths.
  • Pottery and crockery.
  • Timber up to 2m lengths (nails removed or flattened).
  • Tools and gardening equipment.
  • Tree prunings tied up in bundles (max 30cm diameter) - up to 2m lengths.
  • Unbroken glass, mirrors and shower screens.
  • *Whitegoods - e.g. washing machines, dryers and stoves.

* A separate truck will collect these items for recycling purposes.

Items that will NOT be collected

  • Items in excess of 2 cubic metres (2m x 1m x 1m).
  • Items in excess of 2 metres in length.
  • Items that can be disposed of in kerbside bins. 
  • Ammunition, explosives and flares.
  • Asbestos.
  • Bagged household waste.
  • Batteries.
  • Bean bags.
  • Building materials - e.g. concrete, bricks, rocks, dirt, cement sheeting, plasterboard and other building materials.
  • Cans and tins containing paint.
  • Car bodies, vehicle parts, panels, and tyres.
  • Ceramic and terracotta items - e.g. toilets, basins, baths, terracotta pots.
  • Fire extinguishers.
  • Gas bottles.
  • Hazardous waste items as defined under the Environment Protection Act. 
  • Liquid waste - e.g. motor or cooking oil, chemicals.
  • Timber and logs exceeding 30cm diameter.
  • Unbundled green organics.
  • Wooden pallets.

Items for disposal in kerbside bins:

  • Yellow lid - Recyclables such as bottles, cans, cardboard.
  • Green lid - Food organics and garden organics. If you don’t have a green bin please lodge a request for one online 
  • Red lid - general household waste.

Mattresses

While you have a 2 cubic metre space for your hard waste, it's a good idea to be mindful that mattresses can quickly diminish your hard waste collection space.

Depending on the size and number of mattresses you put out for collection, you may not have any room to put out extra hard waste for collection. As a rule of thumb, one king size mattress, or 2 queen size mattresses, will be the whole collection, meaning there will be no room to place other items you may want collected. 

A bed base (slat, ensemble etc) is also considered as a mattress for the sake of the hard waste collection. So you couldn't put out a king size mattress and base to be collected; this would be more than your allocated 2 cubic metres.

If you have mattresses to dispose of in addition to other hard waste, you may need to book a separate collection.

Note: mattresses are collected by separate truck to other hard waste for recycling purposes. Timber, springs and filling can all be recycled.

Free voucher for waste disposal

Owners or occupiers of a residential property are entitled to a free voucher per financial year to dispose of a 6 x 4 trailer load (2 cubic metres) of waste at Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre,181 Morphett Road, North Plympton. Businesses are not entitled to a voucher.

To obtain a voucher, email a request to us at info@wtcc.sa.gov.au with proof of residency or ownership (scan copy or photo).  If suitable information is provided, a voucher and instructions will be issued via email. The voucher is valid for one month from the date of issue. 

A waste voucher is ideal for items that are not accepted in a hard waste collection e.g. building materials, cardboard and large volumes of branches and grass clippings.

Please follow the instructions on the voucher for the recommended order of loading materials onto the trailer.
