Shady Tree Giveaway

The Shady Tree Giveaway seeks to increase the number of trees and canopy cover on private land across the City of West Torrens. As part of the Shady Tree Giveaway Council is providing 180 free advanced trees (1m high) for property owners to plant on their property in West Torrens.

Trees provide many benefits including:

  • Provide shade and cooling
  • Improving air quality (provide oxygen and remove pollutants from the air)
  • Help to reduce energy costs
  • Provide habitat for wildlife
  • Increase property values.

Trees on offer

  • Ginko (Ginko biloba) - a large, deciduous tree (may grow 10m to 12m or above in height)
  • Chinese Pear (Pyrus ussuriensis) - an exotic, ornamental deciduous medium size tree (may grow to 9m in height)
  • Crab Apple (Malus ioensis 'Plena') - an ornamental, deciduous, small size tree (may grow to 6m in height)
  • Willow Myrtle (Agonis flexuosa) - a native evergreen medium size tree (may grow to 10m in height)
  • Water Gum (Tristaniopsis laurina) - a native evergreen medium size tree (may grow 6m to 15m in height)
  • Pink Lady Apple (Malus) - a small, edible fruiting tree (may grow 4m to 5m in height)

How to enter

Council is providing a limited number of vouchers for free trees as part of its Shady Tree Giveaway. It is important you read the terms and conditions before registering using the online form below. Vouchers will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

Trees must be collected at the Shady Tree Giveaway event being held next to the City of West Torrens Hamra Centre Library on Saturday 15 June, 2024 between 10am and 2pm.

Terms and conditions

  • One tree available per property in the City of West Torrens.
  • Tree must be planted on private property within the City of West Torrens (this does not include the verge).
  • All tree maintenance (watering, pruning) is the responsibility of the property owner (or applicant).
  • Applications for strata title properties must include written proof of support by the body corporate.
  • Applications for rental properties must include written proof of support by the landlord.
  • The tree must be planted at least 2 metres from the property boundary to minimise overhanging of neighbouring properties and the verge.
  • The tree must be collected from the City of West Torrens Hamra Centre Library on Saturday 15 June, 2024 between 10am and 2pm.
  • The offer is allocated on a first-come-first served basis.
  • Trees not collected on Saturday 15 June will be offered to another applicant on the waiting list, unless a prior arrangement is agreed by council.
  • Council may conduct random follow-up inspections.

Claim your free tree in two easy steps:

  1. Check you meet all the terms and conditions, then fill out your details using the online form below. Applicants that meet all the terms and conditions will be emailed a Shady Tree Giveaway voucher.
  2. Bring the voucher along to the community event on Saturday 15 June, 2024 between 10am and 2pm to collect your free tree.
