Thebarton Theatre upgrade

The Thebarton Theatre (affectionately known as Thebby) is a much-loved live performance venue in South Australia. Locally, it is an important facility within West Torrens.

Built by the former Thebarton Council and officially opened on Monday 11 June 1928 by Mayor HS Hatwell Esq, Thebarton Theatre was originally called Thebarton Town Hall and Municipal Offices and was considered a grand and luxurious facility with modern conveniences. Almost 100 years later, the theatre's beautiful and ornate features remain intact, however the functionality and amenity for a range of theatre-goers and performers has required a significant upgrade.

Masterplan and funding

In 2023, the City of West Torrens developed a masterplan for the site, in conjunction with theatre specialists and heritage experts. The masterplan created a long-term vision for the site, allowing for works to be staged as funds became available.

Council and the State Government (through the Local Government Infrastructure Partnership Program) committed funding of $4 million each to achieve the first stage of works, with additional funding being provided by the Federal Government through its Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Stage one complete

Stage one of the redevelopment of Thebarton Theatre is now complete and focusses on improving its functionality and amenity. Pedestrian and vehicle access have been improved, along with the user experience by creating a new arrival lobby and bar and lounge areas. The external presentation of the theatre, especially when approaching the site from the east, has also been upgraded in keeping with the theatre's state historical significance.

The new-look Thebby officially opens for business in October 2025. Stay tuned to our website and socials for updates.
