Kings Reserve
Kings Reserve is a much-loved and well-utilised reserve within West Torrens and council is committed to enhancing its value through the development of an updated masterplan.
During 2024, council worked with the Kings Reserve Masterplan Community Reference Group (CRG) to review and refresh a masterplan that had been created in 2018. This masterplan focused on creating a space to meet the evolving needs of our community, however with the development of the neighbouring Adelaide Football Club headquarters at Thebarton Oval, the plan was reassessed and refreshed. The CRG, which included 6 local community members, the Mayor, 2 ward councillors and staff, was formed to review the plan, which has now been approved by council. While consultation on this plan has closed, you can still view it via the Your Say link below.
Where to now?
Design consultants have been engaged to develop the masterplan for costing and construction. Once this is complete, the final detailed designs and costs will be considered by council before moving ahead into construction.
For the transformation of Kings Reserve, council has committed $6.5 million, with a further $2 million of funding from the State Government's Department for Housing and Urban Development.
"This will be our jewel in the crown in the western suburbs," Mayor Michael Coxon said.
"It will be a park that everyone will be envious of.
"We are grateful to the State Government for its funding contribution as this will give us an opportunity to provide our community with a first-class facility."
The master plan includes extensive landscaping, nature play and traditional playground elements, seating, shelters, lighting and barbecues, a public toilet, active recreation elements including basketball, netball, skateboarding and BMX, and expressions of culture and public art.
It aims to improve connection and accessibility around and through the park, as well as create immersive spaces for relaxation and connection with nature and biodiversity. Features include:
Open area of irrigated lawn surrounded by mounded turf and trees.
- Shelters, barbecues, and public toilet.
- Active recreation facilities
- Playground equipment for older children and juniors, including all abilities play opportunities.
- Nature play space.
- Skate park and BMX pump track.
It will also incorporate elements of Kaurna culture through interpretive signage and other features.
The design also features a red brick wall honouring the site's non-indigenous brick-making heritage.
"This is another great example of how council and community can work together, and we thank the Kings Reserve Community Reference Group for its collaboration in helping to bring this project to fruition," Mayor Coxon said.
