1. Hamra Centre Library - front garden bed, Hilton

Little-Galleries_Fringes_Antonia-Ceravolo_Hamra-Library.jpg

Antonia Ceravolo - I am a Multimedia artist with an emphasis of my work is Home, my place of happiness and safety. I studied Printmaking and painting which reflects through my work which is usually 2D. After my father’s passing in 2019 I returned to my art after many years of loss of creativity.

Fringe Junk –Under the Sea - People, places and things from the fringe are usually misunderstood, unseen, not having much importance in the mainstream of our communities.

Walking along West Beach I came across an empty coke can. It spoke to me (not literarily). This is not important, tossed, of no value.

I took the can home. How can I raise this fringe junk to be seen by the mainstream? I have used the discarded to make my art work!

2. West Torrens Memorial Gardens, Hilton

Little-Galleries_Fringes_Felicity-Martens_Memorial-Gardens.jpg

Felicity Martens  Creativity is compelling and cathartic for me.  As a child I littered the rooms in the house with stories and drawings.  I drifted into expressionistic, magical realism both written and painted, and began to understand the connection between creativity and mindfulness practice.  I stopped painting for fifteen years and became a published children’s author.  In 2019 I picked up the brush again and experimented with different mediums and genres.  I’m constantly learning, inching back towards a more developed style of magical realism, storytelling is fundamental to my art.  In 2022 I was a semi-finalist in the Moran National Portrait Prize and in 2023 shortlisted for the West Torrens Art Prize.

On The Fringes Of  I was attracted to the idiom ‘on the fringes of’ and used my love of nature, stories (using idioms), and art, highlighting the significant tree-planting in West Torrens.  I’ve used mixed media and magical realism to reflect both the magic and importance of an urban forest plan considering climate change.

3. Mellor Park - playground path, Lockleys

Little-Galleries_Fringes_Amelia-Castelluci_Mellor-Park.jpg

Amelia Castellucci - I am an artist working from Floating Goose Studios on Kaurna land, Adelaide. I am also a Highschool Art teacher in the West Torrens area and am passionate about promoting and teaching Art to young people. I predominantly use oil paint in my own art practice, though I also enjoy working with ceramics. I like to capture moments in time on my camera, and then go back to the studio and paint them, altering them through the process of painting. The subject matter used is varied, though nature inspired artworks are reoccurring.

Fringes of West Torrens - When thinking of this topic, the first thing that came to mind was the beginning or ending of a day- dawn, and dusk. The artwork presented is to suggest contemplative exploration of the year ahead, with a focus on enjoying quiet moments, and observations of the sky. The use of oil paint showcases these places through my eyes.

5. Holland St/Winwood, Thebarton

Little-Galleries_Fringes_-Caroline-Swinburne_Bloom.jpg

Caroline Swinburne is a local emerging artist working in several mediums including painting, printmaking and ceramics. She is loving the process of finding her artistic niche and enjoys exploring different tools and methods.

Where are you, fringe?  Where does the fringe start? Is it the same for everyone? Does it stay the same over time? Is the fringe self-aware? Do we notice the everyday things at the fringe of our awareness? In the West Torrens area, behind the magpies and the noisy miners, there are over 160 species of birds. I am excited to see our rarer birds, but do I revere our rarer humans? Is it just animals being pushed to the fringe? Were they pushed or did they run? Are the “rare birds” that I don’t notice really even that rare?

These questions are explored in a series of thought-provoking scenes involving everything from familiar icons on the fringe of our local area to fringe communities of people and wildlife.

Living on the Fringe  Walk down Henley Beach Road at Mile End in the 1950’s, when trams used to roll down the road, and life in the city fringe suburbs was a little less complicated.

Paying tribute to the homes that used to surround Stop 1 (just after the Bakewell Bridge), a hive of activity with Trams heading to and from the city, Henley Beach, and Richmond.

See the little cottage garden the homeowner would have taken pride in creating, with all sorts of vibrant flowers and fruit trees.

Modelled in HO 1:87 scale, the South Australian home reflects the prominent architecture of Suburban Adelaide and how we lived 70+ years ago.
