Pigeons
Pigeons on private land
If you have concerns about pigeons congregating on your private property, particular deterrents can be put in place to reduce their impact, including:
- Removing food sources
- Pigeon proofing your building ledges, windowsills and roof tops
- Removing nests
- Implementing scare devices such as audio or video deterrents
It is encouraged that you speak with residents in your local area to implement these techniques together to have the most impact. Professional services from a licensed pest controller can also be considered for the control of feral pigeons.
More information can be found in the Feral pigeons management and control fact sheet.
Pigeons on public land
The feeding of non-domestic or feral pigeons may cause a nuisance and can be considered an offence under the South Australian Local Nuisance and Litter Control Act 2016. As such, you should not feed pigeons that you do not own, as a complaint may result in caution or expiation.
If you believe a member of the community is deliberately feeding feral pigeons and causing nuisance, try speaking with them about the impact this may be having and ask them to stop. If this does not resolve the issue and you are able to obtain evidence which identifies the person feeding the pigeons, you may lodge a formal complaint to Council.
