The state government has approved a $28 million support package to address the impacts of the harmful algal bloom currently affecting parts of South Australia's coastline, including metropolitan beaches. The package has been jointly funded by both state and the Australian governments.

Around 400 species of fish, invertebrates and associated marine and coastal biodiversity have been affected and people are urged to avoid swimming or surfing in discoloured water, foam or where marine life is dead or in poor health. Dog owners are also urged to keep their pets under effective control and prevent them from eating dead or dying fish, which may cause illness.

A Harmful Algal Bloom Taskforce and Reference Group has been established to help industries and stakeholders respond to, and recover from, the algal bloom affecting our environment and coastline.
