Free disposal of chemicals, paint and hazardous materials

The Waste Transfer Station at Adelaide Waste and Recycling Centre, 181 Morphett Road, North Plympton includes a free 'Chemical and Paint Drop-off Centre' which is open during the Waste Transfer Station business hours. The service is free to householders only.

What you can dispose of free

Householders and trade painters can dispose of up to 100 litres of paint or chemicals.

Commercial quantities will not be accepted.

  • acids and alkalis
  • batteries
  • brake fluid
  • cleaning products
  • coolants
  • fire extinguishers (all types)
  • firtilisers
  • fluorescent light globes
  • fumigants
  • liquid paint
  • LPG gas cylinders
  • motor oil
  • pesticides
  • pharmaceuticals
  • photographic chemicals
  • poisons
  • pool chemicals
  • solvents
  • varnishes and stains

Guidelines when at the Centre

  • Please follow the directions of the Transfer Station staff.
  • Place water based paint, oil (solvent) based paint, coolants, motor oil and car batteries in the separate marked containers.
  • Place all chemicals on the pallet provided, preferably in the box or container used for their transport.
  • Liquids cannot be decanted at the Centre.

Instructions for safe disposal

  • Keep original labels on all containers or put labels on known chemicals.
  • Liquids must be in sealed containers.
  • Package securely to prevent spills or leaks e.g. place old containers of liquids in plastic bags or buckets.
  • Transport chemicals in your vehicle's boot or trailer.
  • Place old containers of liquids in plastic bags or buckets to contain leaks.
  • Keep corrosive chemicals eg battery acid away from poisons.
  • Keep oxidising agents e.g. peroxide away from all other materials.
  • Place smaller containers in a box or larger container for ease of unloading.

What will not be accepted at the Centre

  • ammunition and explosives
  • asbestos
  • empty containers e.g. paint cans, chemical containers
  • flares
  • hardened paint
  • hazardous waste from a business, industry or government agency
  • hazardous waste collected for fee or reward
  • needles/sharps
  • smoke detectors/alarms
  • tyres
  • xrays.
