Southwark the latest suburb in West Torrens
Published on 13 November 2025
From 30 October 2025, the area of Thebarton bordered by the River Torrens, Port Road, Light Terrace and Stirling, Anderson and Cawthorne Streets is now known as Southwark.
This new suburb will incorporate the new $1 billion development at the former West End Brewery site, which will feature a mixture-use urban community including retail, commercial, hospitality and community space, delivering up to 1300 new dwellings. Southwark will retain the postcode 5031.
"This is the next step in transforming Adelaide’s inner-west into a city outside of the City," Minister for Housing and Urban Development Nick Champion MP said.
"Southwark becoming a suburb again embodies our government’s commitment to honour Adelaide’s heritage while building the communities of the future.
"The development of 1300 new homes at Southwark Grounds is making great progress and when it comes time for the first residents to move in, they’ll be moving into the established Southwark community."
