The City of West Torrens is hosting a community event for its Native Plant Giveaway and Shady Tree Giveaway on Saturday 23 May 2026 at the West Torrens Auditorium, 1 Brooker Terrace Hilton.

The Shady Tree Giveaway seeks to increase tree canopy cover and shading on private land in West Torrens by giving away a limited number of advanced trees for property owners/ tenants to plant on their property in West Torrens.

Trees offer many benefits including:

  • providing shade and cooling
  • improving air quality by releasing oxygen and remove pollutants from the air
  • lowering energy costs by reducing the need for air conditioning 
  • providing habitat for wildlife
  • increasing property values.

Trees on offer

  • Apple - small, deciduous fruiting tree. May grow 5m high to 3m wide.
  • Euky Dwarf (Eucalyptus leucoxylon) - evergreen native tree with compact form and nectar rich flowers. May grow up to 6m high - 4m wide.
  • Crepe Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica)- small to medium deciduous tree with flowers throughout summer. May grow up to 5m high - 4m wide.
  • Pin Cushion Hakea (Hakea laurina)- small evergreen tree with characteristic 'pom-pom' flowers throughout autumn and winter. May grow up to 6m high - 5m wide.
  • Crimson Bottlebrush (Callistemon citrinus) - small tree with red bottlebrush flowers during summer and autumn. May grow up to 3m high - 2m wide.
  • Chinese Pistachio (Pistacia chinensis) - ornamental deciduous tree with bright display of foliage in autumn. May grow up to 8m high - 6m wide.

Terms and conditions

  • Limit one voucher per property.
  • Current proof of property ownership/tenancy within West Torrens must be presented on the day.
  • Tree must be planted on private property within West Torrens (this does not include the verge).
  • All tree maintenance (watering, pruning) is the responsibility of the property owner (or tenant).
  • The tree must be planted at least 2 metres from the property boundary to minimise overhanging of neighbouring properties and/or the verge.
  • Tenants must provide approval in writing from the property owner (landlord) to plant the tree at the rental property.
  • Strata title properties must include written proof of support by the body corporate to plant a tree on their property.
  • Due to limited stock, please be aware preferred tree species may not be available on the day.
  • The offer is allocated on a first come, first served basis. The number of trees available is limited.
  • Council may conduct follow-up inspections to gauge the success of the program.
  • Council will not be held responsible for the growth or performance of the tree.
  • Tree must be planted in the ground (not in a pot).

Claim your tree in 3 easy steps:

  1. Download the Shady Tree Giveaway voucher(PDF, 381KB).
  2. Check you meet all the eligibility criteria, then print out and complete your details on the voucher (printed copies will also be available at the event).
  3. Bring the completed voucher along with proof of residency/ tenancy to the community event on Saturday 23 May 2026 between 9am - 12pm. The event will be held in the West Torrens Auditorium, 1 Brooker Terrace Hilton.
