History Festival 2026 - open days at Kandahar
Next date: Tuesday, 05 May 2026 | 10:00 AM
to 07:00 PM
Built c1900 on land owned by Captain Morish of ‘Bucklands’, ‘Kandahar’ was a belated wedding present to his daughter Mary Elizabeth when she married Arthur Hill. The house was designed by Edward Davies, notable South Australia architect, who lived at ‘Nesfield’ a little further south along Marion Road. Mr. Harrison who was clerk of works, noted that "the house was stroddled on clay and sand which was said to be the old seashore. The builders had many problems". The house name is derived from the Earl of Kandahar, Field Marshall Frederick Sleigh Roberts (1832 - 1914), a successful British military commander.
Take a look around Kandahar, learn its history and enjoy Devonshire tea with the West Torrens Historical Society.
