Stage 1 works of the West Thebarton Road project (South Road to Queen Street) are now complete with the exception of except planting which is underway.
Local residents and business owners that will be affected by the works have been notified and a community forum was held on 5 June which enabled people to discuss the scope of works, find out about key dates, traffic controls etc.
Stage 2 of the works - the upgrading of Phillips Street (Queen Street to Port Road) has also begun and all works are expected to be completed by February 2019.
Due to the nature of the project, traffic restrictions will be in place to prevent traffic moving through the active work site and various detours through adjacent streets will be utilised as necessary. Access to individual properties will be maintained as much as is practical, with disruptions primarily occurring while excavations are undertaken directly adjacent to a property. The works are likely to affect some utility services to properties for short periods. The Construction Contractor and Service Authorities will liaise with property owners when and if the need arises to interrupt individual property access or services.
West Thebarton Road and Phillips Street are important connector roads in Thebarton as they join two major main road corridors - South Road and Port Road.
In recent years the revitalisation of the Brickworks Marketplace and the establishment of the Thebarton Community Centre has meant more traffic has been using these roads. The establishment and growth of the Thebarton Bioscience Precinct has also put more reliance on these two roads for access.
In addition, the State Government's push for more housing on the inner rim of the metropolitan Adelaide and the rezoning of areas near Phillips Street means that future traffic use may also increase.
Work to be undertaken to improve the safety and traffic flows along West Thebarton Road and Phillips Street will include:
- new pavements, kerbing and footpaths
- new LED street lighting
- upgrades and compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)
- landscaping/beautification - including the replacement of some trees
- upgrade of the Henley Square Bicycle Route.
