Dog owners who take their pooches to West Torrens Dog Park in Marleston can now put their dog waste in compostable bags for green recycling.
A six month trial of the bags will kick off on Friday 5 June 2020.
The dog roll dispensers will contain only green compostable bags and special bins for the collection of these bags will be located in both sections of the park, next to general waste bins. Signs will help dog owners select the correct bin for disposal of waste and the bins will be monitored and emptied weekly.
The aims of the trial are:
- Divert dog waste from landfill where it creates methane, a harmful greenhouse gas.
- By removing the black plastic dog waste bags, allow dog waste to be collected in the organics stream so that it can be composted at a commercial composting facility.
- Assess the degree of public support by monitoring bin usage.
