For more than a decade the City of West Torrens has provided families with a range of free summer events as part of its Summer Festival series.
This summer, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the usual Summer Festival of outdoor music, food, movies and entertainment has been replaced with a new series called Summer Fundays, aimed at getting people out and about, supporting local businesses and venues.
"With physical distancing restrictions, as well as the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, Council found it challenging to plan for our usual Summer Festival series," Mayor Michael Coxon said.
"We still wanted to provide our community with a positive experience, so we created something that would not just give people a chance to get out and experience fun in their own backyard, but would also support local businesses."
Summer Fundays is a ticketing system where West Torrens residents can apply online for free tickets to a variety of experiences including West Beach Mega Adventure Mega Climb, Bounce, Adelaide Sailing Club, Thebarton Ice Arena, mini golf and laser skirmish. There are also a host of unlimited 'come and try' events that people can access including snooker, table tennis, baseball, badminton, plus a range of musical events being held in the Hamra Centre Library and further afield.
Experiences have been divided into three categories, A, B and C and, subject to availability, residents of West Torrens can receive two free tickets to any Group A activity or four free tickets to any Group B activity. People can access as many Group C events as they wish to attend.
"We've tried to make the system as fair and equitable as possible, but ultimately not everyone will get their preferred choice," Mayor Coxon said.
"As a way to make ticket distribution more even, we'll have two release dates for tickets to our Group A and B activities; if people miss out on the first distribution they have a chance for a second try."
The first release of tickets will occur from Thursday 10 December (until exhausted) and the second release will be on Monday 14 December.
"People also have around six months to cash in on their selected experiences too," Mayor Coxon said.
"Tickets will be valid until end of the 2020/21 financial year so it's not like everyone has to use them straight away."
To be eligible, people will need to prove they live in West Torrens so will have to upload proof as part of the registration process.
