In a metropolitan council first, the City of West Torrens is trialling a program to enable greyhounds to run off-leash in public at the West Torrens Dog Park.
The trial will see West Torrens Dog Park, Kurralta Park, become a greyhound-friendly zone every fourth Sunday morning of each month until November. If the trial is a success, the program may become a permanent fixture for greyhound owners.
By law, greyhounds can only exercise off-leash on private property; there are no public areas in metropolitan Adelaide, including designated off-leash areas and dog parks, where they are permitted to run free.
The concept was first mooted in South Australia by Alexandrina Council and the Friends of the Port Elliot Dog Park, who made available a dog park at Port Elliot for greyhound owners. The success of this trial was such that owners from all over the State travelled once a month to Port Elliot to give their dogs time to run and interact with others.
The West Torrens Dog Park trial will see the large dog park closed to all other dogs from 9am - 12 noon on the fourth Sunday of each month. Greyhound owners have the opportunity to book one of two one-hour sessions on each day, with a maximum number of 15 bookings per session. Retired and adopted greyhounds are allowed, however racing and foster greyhounds are not.
